King Cobra Theatre was first formed in 1999 by Brian and a chap named Ian Fellowes-Gordon. They met each other whilst both at Queen Margaret University College, Edinburgh, on different courses. They both had an interest in classic British comedy, dark humour, rock music and theatre. After both participating in the Freshers' Cabaret of 1998, they decided to do something similar themseves next year.

In the summer of 1999, Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace came out (okay, who feels old?), and Brian decided it would be fun to write a pastiche of it. This he promptly did, and it formed the core of King Cobra's Christmas Gig - until the casting requirements became untenable. Not wanting to waste it completely, the Christmas Gig was re-tooled into a sketch show, only keeping the lightsabre fights, which Brian choreographed himself.

The show, despite some problems, was fairly successful. So next term, Ian and Brian began trying out ideas for working together again. The most visible manifestation of this was the Summer Show of 2000, which, due to bad timing and management, and Brian technically no longer being at QMUC, didn't go very well at all.

Brian stayed in Edinburgh for as long as he could to complete his fencing training, and Ian returned to Aberdeen for a change in direction. They met up in the next couple of summers at the Edinburgh Festival, to see if their nebulous plans to put on a show at the Fringe was viable. The answer was, "not really."

Years passed. And then, at the tail end of 2011, Brian's circumstances changed enough to make the answer, "yes!" He put together a project proposal, he recruited people to round out The Committee's skillset, and he found some actors. Edinburgh Fringe 2012, here we come!
